Covid-19
At the beginning of 2020, Monsterboy Lives played the Arkansas Times Musician’s Showcase and The AFEA Conference, showcasing their music to all the major event and festival promoters in the state. We had appearances scheduled all across the state for the rest of the year, and as the outbreak spread, we watched one by one each gig cancel.
We wanted people to stay safe, and we knew they were disappointed to have our shows canceled, so we quickly pivoted to live streams. Monsterboy Lives performed over 60 live streams during the shutdown, reaching as many as 7,000 viewers per night. We wanted to take away the darkness and give people some joy for as long as they wanted to sit around our virtual campfire and listen.
We also launched our program in which we encourage kids to continue to practice music, utilizing Zoom to keep everyone safe, while being able to help parents and teachers during this difficult time. This is a shortened version of the ‘Middle Class of Music’ program we look to launch when the virus is well managed.
With all the newly discovered time on our hands, we have also found ways to mix and master our own music, allowing us to start accepting work creating soundscapes for podcasts. Our first set of songs, written based on the book A Cosmology of Monsters, will be airing on Arts & Letters, a podcast on KUAR (an NPR member station) in 2021. We are currently working on a collaboration album featuring 10 other Arkansas based musicians, in which we write about the life-changing events we have all experienced over the last year.
